my dad died and i was told that he had a policiy in my name. but all his papers where thrown away. how can i find out if he did have a policiy?

I have a follow-up question... if you publish a death announcement via the obituary page in your local newspaper, will that help? in case there really is a life insurance, does that help in letting any insurance company know that a policyholder has died? and will that insurance company try to contact you?
