Hello:

My business partner of several years decided to go into orthotics fraud with an experienced fraudster after we'd run into difficulties in our mutual business. I need to deter him as it not only tarnishes my reputation and the reputation of our business but may also get him into all kinds of legal trouble. Could a knowledgable person please advise what I can do to prevent this. I'm very worried here. We're BC, Canada. Many thanks in advance.

What exactly is your definition of

orthotics fraud
and what 'type' of scam is your partner running and against whom or which carriers? (so we can tell you where to go for help)....Is it against the candian health care? Is he/she billing them for orthotics without providing them at all?...as you know this is a house of cards that will eventually fall..many many people have been caught (in this country anyway) with similar schemes against our medicaid and medicare system....is there a way you can severe your buisness (and personal) ties with this person?

Well, you can exercise the fear of God can tell him about the consequences if he get exposed. Not only it will ruin his reputation, but will also destroy his family life. Tell him that he is completely jeopardizing his future and may end up in the jail.

By the way what is "orthotics fraud"?

Are you running a business of orthopedic appliances?
Is your partner trying to team up with con artists who deal in such appliances?

Tell your partner up front and to his face that you don't want your business involved, and not to do it. No uncertain terms. Explain what the outcome would be if he was caught and if it involves your business together, how it would tarnish your business and your reputation as well, people usually assume the partners were in on it too.

If he refuses, find out how he feels about going about the business alone, since you would dissolve your partnership. If you bring alot to the business, he might reconsider, if not stick to your guns. Not amount of apologizes (on his part) will replace your credibility or reputation.
